We Believe...

Civic Engagement and Democracy are not just for people who are white, cis-gender, heterosexual, financially stable, able-bodied/non-disabled, educated, employed, housed, and not previously incarcerated. Participation should be easy, welcoming, and accessible to all.

Marginalized identities are essential to the beauty of the city and our community. When possible, communities should be allowed to tell their own stories.

Diversity is beneficial for all. We recognize the multiple, intersectional facets of diversity within our community. We recognize people of different genders, gender expressions, sexual orientations, racial identities, ethnic backgrounds, citizenship/immigration status, religious backgrounds, age, ability, socioeconomic status, education completion and family status.

Social justice is having uplifting, teachable dialogues with our neighbors about diversity, access and inclusion, and transforming the mindset and actions of others to support the validation of all residents within our city.

FAQ

Why haven't you heard more from us?

We are doing our due diligence, learning how city government works, and learning about the priorities of the community. We are in this for the long-haul and are excited to help make our city even stronger.

Why are we here? Aren’t La Mirada’s Sheriffs doing fine?

Although law enforcement brutality has not been an issue in La Mirada as far as we know, we believe prevention is still important. We also acknowledge that abuses of power can take forms other than excessive use of force or shootings. The more the community knows about the policies and practices shaping law enforcement in La Mirada, the more productive our conversations we will be.

Why La Mirada “for Change?” What needs to change about La Mirada?

When we say La Mirada for Change, we don’t just mean La Mirada residents advocating for positive changes within the city. We are also saying La Mirada as a city can be a vessel and influencer for change in county policy and state law.

What needs to change in La Mirada?
Examples include mandatory anti-racism training for city staff, council members, and commission members, public to live-streaming of City Council and Commission meetings, and enthusiastic acknowledgement of important cultural moments such as Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, and Pride Month.

Why should we care about Black people dying in Los Angeles since we are in

La Mirada?
As Martin Luther King JR. wrote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” La Mirada shares the same County Supervisors, codes, and Sheriff’s Department as the rest of LA County. As part of LA County we have a responsibility to speak out against injustice, not just within our own city.
